Kuala Lumpur Nightlife

Changkat Bukit Bintang

One of the liveliest and most popular nightlife spots in Kuala Lumpur is Changkat Bukit Bintang. Here you will find many bars, restaurants, restobars, chic cocktail bars and nightclubs. Most of the bars and restaurants are located along the main high street and come to life in the evening.

Changkat Bukit Bintang is located about a 4 minute walk from Bukit Bintang MRT station and Jalan Alor, which is great for dining out. Many of the bars play loud music ranging from hip-hop to electro dance, Latin American, funk, jazz and popular music. A popular Irish bar on this street is called Healy Mac’s, where you can take a seat outside and survey the surrounding local bars, watch the video screens dotted around the place, or enjoy some banter with the locals or other travellers.

Jalan Alor

Jalan Alor is one of the most popular areas in Kuala Lumpur for eating out al fresco. Here you will find many street food restaurants, complete with outside seating areas, offering Malaysian, Chinese, Thai and seafood at very reasonable prices. Menus are provided in Chinese and English, but don’t be afraid of asking the waiters for recommendations.

Some of the most popular restaurants are at the top of the high street, but if you prefer Thai or Vietnamese cuisine, take a wander down the street until you find somewhere that meets your preference. Jalan Alor is worth at least a couple of trips on your visit to Kuala Lumpur, which will enable you to experience the huge diversity of food on offer here.

Sky Bar

Located on the 33rd floor of the Traders Hotel, adjacent to the KYCC and the Petronas Towers, you will find the Sky Bar. The Sky Bar offers unobstructed views of the Petronas Towers, which are particularly stunning viewed after nightfall. Music and light shows are provided to enhance the atmosphere along with a swimming pool adjacent to the bar. You can take a booth next to the floor to ceiling windows for probably the best bar view in Kuala Lumpur. There is a daily DJ on from 6pm to 9pm and you can currently buy 2 for 1 drinks during happy hour, which runs from 11am to 9pm. This bar has won many awards over the years including Asia’s Best Bar Award in 2016.

Tonsai beach is also on the peninsula, but is only accessible by boat and not by walking from the other beaches, due to the high limestone cliffs that surround it. Boats to Railay Peninsula are available from Ao Nang Beach and Noppharat Thera Beach, which are located to the West of Railay,  and Ao Nam Pier, which is to the East of Railay

If you are adventurous, there are climbing courses on the peninsula and diving excursions. It’s a good idea to bring Baht cash here as well, because a lot of the restaurants, shops and cafes do not accept debit/credit cards.

To reach the largest cave, known as the cathedral cave, you will need to climb 272 steps – women are requested to cover up and wear longer shorts or skirts prior to admission. You can rent a sarong from the base of the steps for a cheap price.

Main Batu Cave Malaysia

The admission fee for the Batu Caves is free, but you may give a donation if you like. There is however, an admission charge for the Dark Cave, which is currently 35RM – ($8 USD or £7 GBP approx) for an adult and 25RM ($6 USD or £5 GBP approx) for a child, but that includes a guide which is required.

The steps look quite daunting at first, but if you take your time and have regular stops they are easy to ascend.

There are lots of monkeys living in the surrounding area and they can be quite dangerous if you feed them, but they are certainly entertaining.
